Little Tikes Have Played With Dolls For Centuries

Archaeologists have not been surprised finding dolls in Egyptian tombs that were sealed some 40 centuries ago and rest in peace until modern people have decided to take a closer look at the life of their predecessors. Actually, dolls have been found everywhere where mankind managed to set foot during its history, and every culture, tribe or nation in every epoch have been creating dolls for its little tikes.

Ancient folks used stone, bronze and wood to create dolls while modern manufacturers rely on plastics in their mass production process. However, dolls designs remained relatively unchanged during the centuries reflecting the cultural characteristics of the respective time including apparel, hair cut, shoes design, etc.

Broadly speaking, all dolls are models of a human or an animal and can be made of various materials with people still continuing to create home-made dolls. A modern day doll can feature some advanced properties like voice recognition and mechanical parts allowing it to make simple gestures. Actually, mechanical dolls have entertained little tikes and their parents not later that the 17th century and even earlier.

A doll can be an expensive toy although the basic models are really cheap kids toys made of plastics and cloth. Ancient Greeks presented girls with dolls in their early age and teenage girls were obliged to sacrifice their favorite doll to gods, when entering fertile age. This was a sort of initiation ritual and many modern teenagers go over a same ritual when removing their dolls to the basement, stating they are old enough to play other games.

Boys have their dolls too, and they are called tin soldiers. Some people argue that tin soldiers are not dolls, really. However, since ancient times this type of doll was used by future military commanders to develop their strategy thinking during simulated battles in the back yard.
