Our Greatest Love Is Our Pets
It’s true, we really do love our pets. Last year Americans spent $48 billion on their pets. That’s four times as much as US box office takings in the same year! We love our Hollywood stars, but we love our pets more!
So what are we spending all this money on? Well, if you’re not a pet owner you might be surprised at just what is out there these days. Long gone are the days of buying meat scraps from the butcher and making a leash out of old rope.
Nowadays we’re buying everything from dog chocolate Christmas stockings to dog vitamins. Yes, even Rover needs a quality vitamin and mineral pick-me-up from time to time!
As our disposable income increases, so do the range of products we’re tempted into spending it on. We may be in the middle of a recession at the moment, but most of us still have enough cash to splash out on our pets. Some of us may be looking at cheap rabbit hutches for sale rather than going for the deluxe models, but we’re definitely not leaving our furry friends out in the cold.
And this is no bad thing. After all, compassion is all about caring for those less capable than ourselves, and small fluffy things need looking after almost buy definition. Of course, you could argue that the reason they need looking after is because we’ve selectively bred them to be that way.
Whether or not that’s true, we’ll carry on spending more and more on our pets until the day they die. And even then the spending doesn’t have to stop. Why not get your pet cremated and turned into a diamond? Or you could even follow one lady’s example and get your dog’s body encased in gold. Now there’s an unusual ornament for the living room!
