Microwave ovens are probably one of the most under-rated and dramatic inventions to come from the 20th century. I realize that sounds a little strange but let me explain. In the 19th century (1800’s) families could spend the entire day just preparing their meals. And it would take the entire family helping to prepare enough food as well. Microwave ovens use microwaves, obviously, to agitate the water molecules in food enough that the water heats up and consequently the entire food heats up and cooks. The microwave oven has been the catalyst for a massive billion dollar industry: Frozen foods. Now to make a meal all you have to do is take one of your simple frozen meals, put it in the microwave for 3 minutes and you’re done! What took many long hours just a few decades earlier could now be done in 3 minutes.
