Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31 of each year. The holiday is associated with All Saint’s Day, or All Hallow’s Day as it was previously known. The word Halloween is a shortened form of Hallow’s Evening, or Hallow E’en, used in a manner similar to Christmas Eve. It was believed that on that night, demons, restless spirits, and other foul supernatural beings could roam the earth freely looking for victims. In order to confuse the evil spirits, people dressed in costumes. Today, the holiday has lost most of its original religious significance, and is more about community.

Kids love Halloween, as they have the opportunity to dress as their favorite characters from stories, television shows, and movies. They often have parties at school, and on the evening of Halloween they go trick‑or‑treating. This involves going door to door in costume, knocking, and saying “trick or treat” when the door is answered. The home occupant traditionally gives candy or some other treat. It is not uncommon for kids to come home at the end of the night with bags full of candy from their neighbors. This is the “treat” portion of trick or treat. The trick is traditionally for those that refuse to give treats; some sort of prank would be pulled on them.

Adults also enjoy celebrating this holiday. Halloween is a popular time of year for costume parties and contests. Young adult females often dress in provocative costumes, much to the delight of the male attendees. Many bars and similar establishments have costumes for the best costume or sexiest costume, often with cash or other prizes awarded. As these parties are popular times for drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, police are often on the lookout for those driving while intoxicated, and checkpoints looking for impaired drivers are common. One popular outfit idea for women is to dress in a peacock costume. The guys at the party are sure to enjoy seeing you dress in a sexy peacock costume.

In all, Halloween is a holiday celebrated by children and adults alike. Though their method of celebration differs, costumes and fun are consistently involved.
