If you’re new to electric guitar playing you may have wondered how to get that electric guitar sound. You’ll need a few guitar effects to do that. The big three are delay, chorus, and of course, distortion. They aren’t the only effects, but they’re the ones that everyone uses at least one of.

The typical electric guitar sound is distortion, it’s the sound you think of when you think of rock guitar. It’s used in a lot of other styles too, it’s why every guitar amp comes with distortion. From a practical standpoint if you’ve already got distortion on your amp then you should get a chorus pedal first – unless you just can’t stand the sound of your amp. Chorus is probably the second most popular effect behind distortion, and they work well together, chorus can make your distortion sound even better. What’s nice about effects pedals, is that you can add effects as you can afford them – and many people consider them better than their digital equivalents.
