Spending Time Outdoors Needs Preparation
When you decide to start spending more time in the outdoors it seems like such a simple choice to make. You want to get out and enjoy the beautiful countryside while also getting some exercise, it all adds up to a happier and healthier life so what could possibly go wrong. Well it all starts with a great idea and goes from there. Are you just hoping to go for the odd 30 minute walk around the local parkland once a week or do you want to hike the mountain trails with a easy up tent and some food in a backpack and stay our for a night or two.
The two things require very different preparation and fitness levels. You should probably start of with a walk round the park and gradually lengthen that out until you have enough stamina to walk for a few hours without a break before you start going too far afield. Far too many people go for a hike up a mountain without any real preparation, then they have to be rescued by the sheriffs dept. You do not want to become one of those people that gets featured on the local news so think and prepare before going anywhere.
Even if you think you will only be gone for a few hours make sure you tell people where you are going. Take along a few essentials, a folding tactical knife, some energy bars, water and a heat retaining blanket can all be carried in the pockets of your coat, you do not need to carry a huge backpack everywhere you are going.
If you are going for a hike with the family then make sure everyone has their own water and if you have children it is a good idea to take some extra bottles along. Never assume that everyone has brought along the things that they will need, double check and ask to see the items if need be.
It may seem mean but it is better to annoy the kids a little than to realize that no one has any water left to drink half way up the mountain. Preparation is vital for a safe and enjoyable hiking trip.
