Should I buy a Kindle 3?
If you are asking yourself whether you need to buy a Kindle 3 then you probably already have realised the benefits that come from having an eReader. And you are not alone – eBooks now outsell regular hard copy equivalents on Amazon and the Kindle 3 is the best selling product, and most highly rated product on Amazon. Given that there are some 15 million products for sale on Amazon at any given time, this is quite a feat. Amazon has remained the leader in eReaders for a number of years with its hugely popular Kindle series. The Amazon Kindle 3 is the latest incarnation of this device and has proven to be the most popular eReader ever. The Kindle 3’s popularity in in some part due to the general acceptance and uptake of reading eBooks, but has more to do with the improvements made by Amazon over previous Kindle models. For starters the memory has been doubled, allowing 3500 books to be stored on a 4Gb memory. Secondly the ergonomics and practicality of the device has drastically improved by making the Kindle 3 lighter, thinner and smaller, but retaining the full 6 inch screen size. The smaller size means that for the first time it is practical to carry your Kindle with you every day as it fits easily into a pocket or purse. The Kindles screen has also been improved with sharper text and a much wider range of fonts and scripts available including Chinese and Cyrillic. However probably the biggest advance seen in the Kindle 3 is the additional of Wi-Fi as standard and 3G as an option. This gives users a much improved and user friendly method to download content. Some have asked why Amazon bothered to have a Wi-Fi version at all – this is because there are some markets outside of the US that do not have 3G networks and the Wi-Fi option allows these markets to use a Kindle without having to pay for unnecessary 3G components. The Kindle 3 comes in two colours – classic white and graphite, although as per usual there are a large number of covers and jackets available – some of which include an integrated light source to aid night time usage.
