Pros and Cons of Buying Used Sconces
Improving the quality and appearance of your home’s interior lighting design can be a lot of fun, but it can also be quite expensive. Plenty of homeowners find themselves asking whether there is a way to lessen the financial burden. Can they buy used sconces, for example?
The short answer is yes. If you have your eye on your budget and these days, most people do, then buying lighting fixtures that have been previously used can be a great way to stretch your dollars and cents.
But like everything else, there are both pros and cons.
For example, saving money is good. And it’s also good to extend the useful life of lights that are still functional. Just because someone is done with their elegant candle sconces, doesn’t mean they need to go to the landfill. They can find a home with you!
You do, however, need to keep a few things in mind. First, the market for used lighting fixtures is nowhere near as broad as that for new. So you are putting quite a limit on your range of choices. Are you okay with that? Do you mind looking at only a dozen options as opposed to, say, one hundred?
On a related note, you might find that you have to wait a bit to find the perfect wall sconce. Are you the patient type, willing to bide your time until the bathroom lighting of your dreams appears? Or do you need it yesterday?
Also, you need to be sure that fixture works and does not present any safety concerns. You can probably determine its functionality on your own, but you might want to enlist an electrician or qualified lighting designer to give it the quick once over for safety.
Used lighting isn’t the most common way to redesign your home, but it is an option. You need to be patient and you need to be thrifty-minded. But if it’s the right way for you to go, you can get a new look in your home for a lot less money.
