Find the Right Pool Heater For You

There are three major types of pool heaters you will need to consider when shopping: gas heaters, electric heaters, and solar heaters. While each type of heater has its advantages and disadvantages, one will likely work better than the others for you depending on your needs and your local climate.

While gas pool heaters are larger and more expensive than electric and solar heaters, they have the ability to heat pool water faster and hotter than both electric heat pumps and solar heaters. They have the ability to really raise the mercury in your pool thermometer. Gas heaters are perfect for quick heating situations such as when guests arrive, or for those who want to heat their pool only once in a while. Gas heaters are appropriate for those who want to heat their pools well into the cooler seasons.

Electric heaters or “heat pumps,” are run solely on electricity. Heat pumps are efficient and can heat pool water to 90 degrees. Heat pumps cost more annually to run than solar powered heaters depending on the temperature you prefer your pool. With proper care, electric heat pumps will generally last a long time depending on the heater’s make and model.

Lastly, solar heaters are a growingly popular means of heating your pool water. Solar heaters use large solar panels through which pool water is pumped. Solar pool heaters generate power from the sun, free of cost (to a point). Your swimming pool’s pump pumps water through the heater, warming the pool. The size and cost of the heater and its panels will depend on the size of your pool and of course on your pools location. The only cost of running the heater (after its purchase) will be the slight increase of your electric bill from running your pools normal pump. The solar panels come in a variety of sizes. The surface area of your panels should be at least 2/3 the size of your pools surface area. You should place the panels where they will receive the most unobstructed sunlight – rooftops are a great option.

Regardless of the pool heater you choose, you’re sure to love the extra time and enjoyment you’ll get from having the ability to control your pool’s temperature.
