Discover San Diego’s Hillcrest Neighborhood

San Diego is one of the many West Coast cities known for having a very diverse population and culture, a fact matched only by its equally diverse natural and man-made treasures. Its diversity and tolerance for a wide variety of lifestyles is a trait shared by practically all of its neighborhoods, with Hillcrest, in particular, being one of the best examples.

Hillcrest is known for being a very good haven for the LGBT community, and in fact has a large population of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders. Hillcrest’s LGBT community has launched and supported many of the area’s establishments and businesses, like bars, cafes, boutiques, art galleries, museums, bookstores, and many more. These establishments give a good glimpse of the neighborhood’s style and culture, and are very welcoming to everyone, straight or gay.

The neighborhood also has a number of different festivals and celebrations. The Lesbian and Gay Pride Parade, a yearly event hosted every mid-summer, is one of the biggest celebrations in Hillcrest, and is an event that can be celebrated, not just by lesbians and gays, but everyone. In addition, there’s also CityFest, a street festival where locals and visitors can enjoy live performances, indulge in a lot of different foods and dishes, and grab their fill from the iconic beer garden.

But celebrations and festivals aren’t the only reasons to go visit Hillcrest. Balboa Park, one of San Diego’s biggest attractions, is located here, a 1,200 acre haven of greenery, museums, restaurants, and shops. Balboa Park is famous, not just in the U.S., but around the world, and is one of the oldest public-recreation sites in the country.

Hillcrest can be a very daunting area to visit, due to its large size. However, while it is highly recommended for visitors to take vehicles in order to be able to enjoy all of the area’s important venues, walking is something that gives visitors to Hillcrest a new tourist experience.

Whether it’s because of its numerous attractions, welcoming LGBT community, and iconic, world-famous venues, Hillcrest is definitely a must-visit neighborhood visitors to San Diego can enjoy!
