Adding a Sitting Area to a Master Bedroom with Tub Chairs

For the homeowner who is fortunate enough to have a large master bedroom, there are many furnishing choices beyond the obvious bed and dresser. Some choose to include an office area with a desk and computer, but even more popular is the addition of a sitting area. This can evoke an additional level of comfort and make the room feel like a true oasis from the rest of the world.

One should strive to make the space feel distinct from the rest of the room, without it feeling too busy or over crowded. Before shopping, measure the general area to be used. Then measure the pieces to be purchased. At times it is helpful to use masking tape to ‘draw’ out the arrangement on the floor to make sure that everything will fit.

Some choose to add a physical divider like a decorative screen, but more often the distinction is made by the furniture grouping. One possibility that offers function, comfort and economy of space is the use of tub chairs. These are distinguished by their rounded backs in a semi-circular shape, usually having their arms at the same level as the back, or slightly sloping down toward the opening. They come in a variety of sizes, styles and materials. Some versions have the traditional four legs, while others provide a modern look with a swiveling pedestal base. Some models might evoke a wonderfully cozy feel, offering a womb-like space where a person can settle in and relax. Other variations have a more formal appearance, perhaps incorporating a leather finish. If the room is intended to have a more casual appearance, use the upholstery to meet that need. Fabric tub chairs upholstered in corduroy will present a different feel than those covered with crushed velvet. One might choose to use a tub chair to introduce a bold color choice for an accent. For example, consider selecting a red tub chair to compliment a décor that is primarily earth tones.

Once the seating is established, consider adding some type of table and lighting. If the area is to be used for reading, consider one or more well-placed floor lamps. Track lighting is also a viable option. A coffee or end table can be incorporated to complete the look.

When completed, the entire space should be inviting and relaxing. Both the sleeping and sitting areas should be visibly distinct, but maintain an overall coordinated look.
